Expected Loads
Vehicle weight, lifts, workbenches and stored equipment all influence slab thickness and reinforcement. A workshop planned around a car lift has different requirements than a general storage garage.
Dimensions and Layout
Measure vehicles with doors open. Add room for walking around and for future work areas. Slabs pour to a specific footprint, so plan the intended layout carefully.
Base Preparation
A properly compacted base is essential for slabs that carry vehicles. Poor base preparation can lead to cracks and settling that are difficult to repair.
Thickness and Reinforcement
Garage and workshop slabs are typically thicker than a residential patio and use rebar or heavier wire mesh reinforcement.
Drainage and Slope
Slabs may include a slight slope toward a door or drain so that spilled liquids and rainwater tracked in from vehicles do not pool.
Finish Options
Smooth trowel finishes are common for workshops. Broom finishes provide more traction. Sealers can be considered after cure.
