Project Size and Thickness
Total square footage is the starting point, but thickness matters just as much. A four-inch residential slab uses less material than a six-inch slab designed to carry heavier loads. Larger projects can sometimes benefit from economies of scale on pour day, while very small projects carry proportionally higher setup costs.
Removal of Existing Concrete
If an old driveway, patio or slab must come out before the new pour, removal and haul-off become part of the scope. Reinforced concrete takes longer to break up than unreinforced flatwork, and disposal fees vary with volume.
Excavation and Base Preparation
The base under concrete is what keeps it flat and stable. Cost is influenced by how much soil must be removed, how much compacted base material is added and whether the site has soft or disturbed soil that needs additional attention.
Reinforcement
Rebar, wire mesh or fiber reinforcement all add cost but improve long-term performance. The right choice depends on intended use and expected loads, not on trying to save a few dollars on materials.
Site Access
How easily a mixer truck can reach the pour location changes labor time. Tight backyards, narrow gates, sloped lots and long wheelbarrow runs all raise labor costs compared to a driveway pour with direct truck access.
Drainage and Grading
Concrete needs to shed water. If the site has drainage problems, correcting slope, adding channel drains or coordinating with existing gutters becomes part of the scope.
Finish and Decorative Options
Broom finish is standard. Smooth trowel, exposed aggregate, stamped patterns and integral color each add labor, material and skilled-finisher time.
