Summer Heat and Fast Setting
Abilene summers regularly run above 95°F. Hot concrete sets faster, which shortens the window for finishing and raises the risk of plastic shrinkage cracking. In hot weather we schedule early starts, keep the subgrade damp before placement, and plan crew size so the slab can be finished before it stiffens.
Wind Is the Underrated Problem
Sustained West Texas wind pulls moisture out of a fresh slab surface faster than sun alone. That can craze or dust the surface and cause early shrinkage cracks. Windbreaks, evaporation retarders and prompt curing all address it.
Curing Matters More Than the Pour Day
Concrete gains strength through hydration, not drying. Curing the slab — keeping moisture in during the first days — does more for long-term durability than any single decision on pour day, especially in dry, windy conditions.
Cold Snaps and Freezing Nights
Abilene sees short but real freezes. Fresh concrete that freezes before it has gained strength can be permanently damaged. When overnight lows threaten, we either postpone or protect the slab with blankets and adjust the mix.
Rain Before, During and After
Rain on a fresh surface can wash out cement paste and ruin the finish. Rain before the pour saturates the base, which must be dry enough to compact properly. We watch the forecast and would rather move a pour by a day than place concrete into a bad window.
What This Means for Your Timeline
Expect some weather flexibility in your schedule. Typical guidance after placement: foot traffic in 24-48 hours, vehicles after about 7 days, with full design strength around 28 days. Extreme heat or cold can shift those numbers.
