Confirm the Existing Patio's Condition
Building against a patio that is already cracking or settling can pull the new section down with it. Evaluate the existing slab first.
Elevation Matching
The new section should meet the existing patio at the same height. Small elevation differences become trip hazards and drainage problems.
Joint Between Old and New
Old and new concrete cannot be poured monolithically. A joint is required so the sections can move independently without transferring cracks.
Base Preparation
The added section needs the same base preparation any new patio would. Skipping preparation is a common cause of premature settlement on additions.
Color and Texture Differences
New concrete will not match old concrete exactly. Extensions are functional additions, not color-matched restorations.
