Why Slope Matters
Water that pools on a driveway soaks into control joints, freezes and thaws, and eventually widens cracks. Proper slope directs water away from the garage and toward the street or a controlled drainage feature.
Directing Water Away From Structures
The single most important rule is that water should never flow toward the house or garage. A driveway that pitches toward the foundation can push runoff into places it does not belong.
Handling Low Spots
If the surrounding yard drains toward the driveway, the slab may need swales, edge grading or a channel drain to move water past it rather than across it.
Fixing an Existing Drainage Problem
When a driveway is being replaced, slope can be corrected as part of the new pour. Isolated drainage additions on an existing driveway are possible but limited.
